Improving Board Effectiveness Through Diversity
DiverseForce and ImpactED at the University of Pennsylvania are proud to launch a DiverseForce On Boards cohort with support from the William Penn Foundation. This program, housed at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Liberal and Professional Studies (LPS), trains and matches middle to senior level professionals of color to serve effectively on nonprofit boards. Now in its second year, this upcoming cohort focuses specifically on matching board candidates with William Penn Foundation grantees from across our Creative Communities, Great Learning, and Watershed Protection programs. Additional resources are available to Watershed Protection grantees through a partnership with Mid-Atlantic Youth Anglers and Outdoors Partners.

The William Penn Foundation recognizes that focusing on racial diversity, equity, and inclusion helps them advance the Foundation’s institutional values and programmatic goals, respond to community needs, demonstrate thought leadership, and contribute to a thriving and inclusive working environment where staff of all backgrounds feel welcomed and engaged in the Foundation’s mission. This collaboration with the DiverseForce On Boards program acknowledges that the racial disparity across the sector and is in alignment with the William Penn Foundation’s ongoing commitment to racial equity.

Over the next two years, the program will recruit, train, and match up to 50 professionals of color with a select group of William Penn Foundation grantees. Organizations seeking to improve board effectiveness through more inclusive practices will also have the opportunity to participate in board inclusion trainings conducted by DiverseForce, and to be featured as William Penn Foundation funded matching partners at up to three board matching events in 2019.
